i'm losing it with mad little birds

In February my best quilting buddy coerced me into signing up with her for a series of classes at Material Obsession. Until February I was happily ensconced in my safe quilty zone of antique and reproduction quilts. I had worked hard to develop a style of blending old blocks with repro fabrics, and I was comfortable.

Now that comfort zone is all gone! Our fabulous tutor Marg Samson has dragged me (kicking and screaming almost) into the world of bright, mad, whimsical and funny. I am sewing hexagons...something I had avoided my entire quilting life.

I have gone from predominantly hand piecing to applique, and I have entered the realm of Kaffe Fasset, Amy Butler and Nani Iro.

My stash has gone from drab to sparkling!

The workshops continue monthly, of course I'm behind with my homework, but the quilt will be large (is there any other type in my house?)... each block is 22" square and there will be 4 hexagon star blocks, 5 applique bird blocks, then borders of hexxies and applique - what else?

Rastafarian pineapples...

I know, I know, I know exactly how you feel!
I am inspired by the brights too and trying to work on mixing my love of repros and adding a few "brights" into my quilts now too!
Love your progress on this quilt its beautiful

Your blocks are gorgeous!! Brights have evolved a LOT since the mid 90's. The girls at MO and Kaffe and his gang have done a lot of good :) Who says we can't love and draw inspiration from both? I love the hexie wheels. Una

beautiful use of the fabrics. I'm not drawn to the brights, but seeing these wonderful appliques I'm starting to change my mind.

Beautiful work!! I looove those birds!

I had a comment recently from a friend who was surprised I was sewing with Kaffe Fassett fabrics...."they are out of your comfort zone!"...Oh, yes!!! Isn't it great to get out of our comfort zone and discover new, delicious fabrics to create with!

Love love love your work, your hexagon stars appliqued onto the circle are wonderful. I am becoming quite addicted to bright funky these days, I think it could have something to do with the Material Obsession influence. How can you resist in that shop. You have a wonderful tutor in Marg

I feel like I may be the last hold out on the brights. But after reading these messages, I can see that most everyone, including yourself, have been were I am. Your Rastafarian pineapple makes me smile.
